Japan has taken a significant step in strengthening its defense capabilities by successfully testing the new 12SSM-ER cruise missile, which boasts an impressive range of approximately 1,500 km. According to the Japan Ministry of Defense, the tests were conducted in collaboration with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces.

Details of the Tests

The missile launches were conducted from a land-based launcher equipped with two transport and launch containers, mounted on a heavy-duty Mitsubishi 8×8 Gen.2 platform. During October 2024, five tests were carried out: three from land-based launchers and two from naval platforms.

  • 1st launch (land-based): October 4, 2024.
  • 2nd launch (land-based): October 14, 2024.
  • 3rd launch (land-based): October 17, 2024.
  • 4th launch (naval-based): October 28, 2024.
  • 5th launch (naval-based): November 1, 2024.

These tests highlight Japan’s technological advancements in modernizing its military capabilities. The missile, including its booster, measures 9 meters in length, has a diameter of 1,200 mm, and weighs 1,600 kg, comparable to the Tomahawk cruise missile widely used by the United States.

Enhanced Capabilities

The new weapon is expected to enter service with anti-ship regiments by late 2025, expanding the effective destruction range from 400 km to 1,500 km. This marks a significant strategic milestone for deterring threats, particularly amidst rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region and geopolitical competition with China.

In addition to the land-based version, Japan plans to equip surface warships, such as missile destroyers and frigates, with the 12SSM-ER. A modified version for use in F-2 fighter jets is also under development and is scheduled for completion by 2027.

Independent Development

Although Japan was not a signatory to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the development of cruise missiles with a range exceeding 1,000 km has faced international political pressure, particularly from the United States. Nonetheless, the country continues to advance its projects, including missiles with ranges between 2,000 km and 3,000 km.

The Japanese government has classified the 12SSM-ER as a long-range cruise missile and integrated it into the SSM-2 missiles, based on the shipborne Type 17 variant. This approach elevates Japan’s defense capabilities and strategic projection.
